Building Stories On Air
PAGE STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION : )
Every Sunday, live, 4-5 PM on WCOM-LP (starting on March 1st, 2026)
Have you noticed how our society moves faster and faster? How we take small breaks, scrolling for a moment, just to catch our breath? Somewhere along the way, our imagination begins to fade, almost without us noticing. Young children unleash their imagination naturally. They invent stories without judgment or hesitation. And yet, as we grow older, we tend to forget how to imagine this way ourselves. Why does it matter? Because imagination stimulates the brain, fosters creativity, and alleviates boredom. Hence, adults can learn immensely by listening to young children, experiencing firsthand the joy of imagining without limits.
Building Stories On Air, a partnership between Giggles and Chisels, LLC and WCOM-LP, is a weekly radio program where adults and young children invent stories together, using dice, gentle prompts, and whimsical characters. By elevating stories invented across generations, Building Stories On Air reminds everyone, i.e., adults and children alike, of the beauty of imagination.
- Each episode is broadcast on Sunday on WCOM-LP from 4 pm to 5 pm.
- Each episode brings together two or three child–adult pairs, in order to offer a space for each child’s voice while inviting adults to rediscover their own imagination.
- Musical pauses are used throughout as needed. Listeners at home, families, and community members can share their own ideas on social media.
Frédérique Yova, PhD, creates engaging prompts for each program, guiding the adult-child pairs and connecting the story’s threads. She is the founder of Giggles and Chisels, LLC, a small company based in Chapel Hill, NC, aiming to elevate the uniqueness of young children through stories and woodcarving, and brings 15+ years of experience in early childhood.
Over time, we hope Building Stories On Air encourage adults in our community to slow down and notice young children’s thinking and their way of seeing the world. We envision people build stories together at home, at the park, or while waiting in line. We imagine children feeling proud and excited when their stories are shared on air.
We welcome the opportunity to partner with small businesses located in Chapel Hill / Carrboro, to either donate to our program, spread the word, and help us recruit families.
Interested in being a guest on Building Stories on Air!
Before you sign up, please read and reach out if you have any questions! We want to be as transparent as possible so your experience is as smooth as possible!
- Frederique, the creator of the wooden Fellow, will guide the conversation
Think of Frédérique as the conductor of our story orchestra. She will guide the flow, inviting everyone to share, signaling when it is time to pause and listen, or take the lead for a moment. If she gently redirects or gives a child space to finish a thought, that is part of keeping the magic flowing. Trust the process (and her background in early childhood!)
- Other families and children will be present
Multiple guests (adults and children) participate together. Please listen respectfully, build on others’ ideas, and share the space.
- No photography during recording, please, unless you have permission!
To protect all children’s privacy, we request that no photos or videos be taken during the recording session.
- This is live (and recorded for future broadcast)
Once we are on air, content cannot be “taken back.”
- This is about storytelling and community, not promotion : )
This show is about imagination and connection, not advertising businesses, products, or services.
