Early math workshops: Finding Mathematical Thinking in Everyday Moments

Have you ever struggled with math yourself and worried about passing that anxiety along? Do you feel confused by some elementary-age math homework (so different now!)? Believe that math is just not for you?

If so, our early math workshops are for you! And if you think you are not a “math person”, I promise I will change your mind : )

Math is indeed all around. Being on time is math, choosing a pattern on a shirt is math, not bumping into someone at the grocery store is math. Math is everywhere; you may just need some guidance to notice it and nurture it.

Our workshops are perfect for:

  • Anyone who wants to support young children’s mathematical thinking
  • Anyone who thinks “I’m not a math person” : )

Workshop Details:

Duration: 75 minutes

Cost: $30 per person

Location: to be discussed. We have a lot of flexibility in the Chapel Hill / Carrboro / Durham area (NC).

How it works: Gather 4-6 people who would love to learn about early math and we will come to you. The Wooden Fellows will be there to guide us because they see math everywhere they go!

You will explore:

  • How young children think mathematically and simple questions and prompts that deepen mathematical thinking throughout the day
  • Where to find math in everyday moments
  • Any early math topics that your group wants to focus on

This workshop is hands-on,  playful, and personalized to your group. You will leave with resources and concrete ideas you can use immediately, whether you see a young child daily or visit occasionally.

Interested but solo? Reach out anyway! We are building a list of folks who want to attend, and I will let you know when the next public workshop is scheduled. Or we can tailor some of our 1:1 sessions!

Interested but not in our area? Reach out anyway! Depending on your group’s needs, we may be able to offer a workshop remotely.

Book a free 15-minute chat and let’s talk about what the wooden Fellows and I could build for you! Limited spots available!

Cost should never be a barrier. Reach out if you need support with the fee, we will work something out.

Will I meet the wooden Fellows?

Each session is facilitated by Frédérique, founder of Giggles and Chisels, LLC, but yes, the wooden Fellows will pop up, of course.

Our team, as of June 2025!

Frédérique has worked in early childhood for over 15 years and loved exploring early mathematics through picturebooks during her doctoral studies. She has a deep admiration for young children’s fascinating ways of thinking and loves sharing her passion for those young minds. She created the wooden Fellows to help people slow down, notice, and deepen their connection with young children while also rediscovering their own inner child.

FAQ

What if I don’t know much about early childhood education? That is exactly why we designed our sessions and why we meet beforehand! No experience needed, just a desire to connect more deeply.

What ages do you work with? These sessions are designed for adults connecting with children  under 8.
